Local guidance

Phlebotomy

  1. 500ml weekly in the depletion stage

  2. Guided by FBP and ferritin levels

  3. Each 500ml = 0.25g

  4. Target range: ??

Phlebotomy should be initiated after discussion with local consultant:

  1. Ferritin > 1000 ug/L -  usually recommended

  2. Ferritin 200 - 1000 ug/L  - consultant advice; serial re-measurement

Contraindications to phlebotomy

  1. Anaemia

  2. Heart failure


Iron chelation may be an alternative

Patient advice

  1. Avoid Fe supplements

  2. Limit alcohol consumption
